How Invar is machined: sequence, parameters and heat treatment
Invar 36 cuts on the same mills and lathes as stainless. What changes is the order of operations. Cutting puts stress and cold work into the surface, and in a low-expansion alloy that stress can raise the CTE and let the part move after inspection. Precision Invar parts are therefore machined in stages: rough, stress relieve, finish and, where the drawing asks for it, stabilize.
The guides in this section cover each stage and each process. Start with the stress relief guide if you are writing a heat treatment note, the parameters guide if you are a shop setting up the first job, and the milling and turning guides if you are deciding how a part should be fixtured and cut.
