Invar Mill Certifications: What a Certified Material Report Should Show

A material certificate is easy to treat as a formality until the day a program requires traceability you do not have, or a customer questions whether the part they received actually matches the alloy on the drawing. Knowing what a standard Invar cert includes, and what it does not, helps you ask for the right documentation up front instead of discovering a gap after the part ships.
What a standard mill cert includes
Most Invar 36 bar and plate is produced to ASTM F1684, and Kovar to ASTM F15, and a standard mill certificate for material to these specs typically shows:
- Chemical composition, confirming the nickel, and for Kovar the cobalt, content falls within the specification range
- Heat or lot number, identifying which production run the material came from
- Mill or supplier name, and sometimes country of melt
- Reference to the governing specification, such as ASTM F1684 for Invar 36
This level of documentation is standard and typically costs nothing extra, since it comes with the material as a matter of course. It confirms the material is genuinely the alloy specified, which matters more than it might seem, since Invar and similar low expansion alloys are specialty products that a buyer generally cannot verify visually.
What a standard cert does not include
A standard mill cert does not include measured CTE data for that specific heat lot. The CTE values commonly quoted for Invar 36, typically around 1.2 to 1.6 ppm per degree C, and for Super Invar, typically around 0.3 to 0.6 ppm per degree C, are handbook values representing typical material behavior, not a guarantee for a specific batch. CTE can vary slightly between heat lots based on exact composition and processing, and for most applications that variation does not matter. For a program with a tight thermal stability requirement, it can.
If your application needs a verified CTE for the actual material in your part, that requires a separate test, either performed by the mill on request or by an independent lab on a sample from your lot. It adds cost and lead time, so it needs to be specified before the material is ordered, not requested after the part is finished.
When to ask for more than a standard cert
- Aerospace and space programs often require full material traceability, sometimes down to a certificate that follows the material through every process step from raw stock to finished part, plus process certifications for heat treatment and any coating applied.
- Medical and other regulated industries may require specific documentation formats or additional testing depending on the application, though Invar itself is uncommon in medical uses compared with its aerospace and optical applications.
- Programs with tight thermal stability requirements, such as space optics or precision metrology equipment, may need measured CTE data for the specific lot rather than relying on handbook values.
- Programs requiring dimensional traceability, where every part’s inspection data is retained and tied back to the material lot, rather than only a first article inspection report.
For a general industrial, prototype or one-off optical part, a standard mill cert is usually sufficient, and asking for more than the application needs adds cost without adding value.
Reading a cert before it reaches you
A few things worth checking on a cert you receive:
- The chemistry values fall within the specification’s stated range, not just close to it
- The heat or lot number on the cert matches the material actually used in your part, which a good shop confirms through its own traceability process
- The specification referenced matches what your drawing calls out, since Invar 36 and Super Invar, for example, are different materials with different specs and different certs
If something on the cert looks inconsistent, or a shop cannot produce one for a specialty alloy like Invar, that is worth raising before you accept the parts, not after.
What to specify on your RFQ
State explicitly whether you need:
- A standard mill cert with chemistry, which most shops provide as a matter of course
- Measured CTE data for your specific heat lot
- Full traceability documentation for an aerospace, space or other regulated program

Being specific up front avoids a re-quote later, since documentation requirements found out after a quote is issued usually mean the shop has to revise the price and lead time.

Frequently asked questions
Is a mill cert the same thing as measured CTE data?
No. A standard mill cert confirms chemistry and sometimes mechanical properties for the heat lot. CTE is a separate property, and unless the mill or a lab has specifically measured it for your lot, the number on your drawing is a handbook value, not a tested one.
Do I need a full traceability package for every Invar part?
No. Full traceability, with certs following the material from mill to finished part, mainly matters for aerospace, space and other regulated programs. A general industrial or optical part usually only needs a standard mill cert with chemistry.
