Choosing Invar Stock: Bar vs Plate vs Sheet

The form of Invar stock a part starts as, round bar, rectangular plate or thin sheet, affects lead time, material cost and sometimes the part’s final dimensional behavior. Matching the stock form to the part geometry early, rather than defaulting to whichever form looks closest to the finished shape, avoids paying for material that gets machined away and avoids delays chasing an odd size.
Bar stock
Round or hex bar is the natural starting point for turned parts: bushings, spacers, shafts and anything with rotational symmetry. Because turning removes material concentrically, bar stock wastes less material than starting a round part from plate, where most of the material outside the finished diameter becomes chips.
Bar is also generally the fastest stock form to source in common diameters, since round bar in standard sizes is what mills produce most routinely. Odd diameters, especially large ones, can take longer to source and may require ordering oversize and turning down, which adds material cost.
Plate stock
Plate is the standard starting point for milled parts, brackets, mounts and anything with a rectangular or irregular footprint that is not rotationally symmetric. Plate thickness is available in standard increments, and as covered in why Invar 36 parts are costly, a part that needs a thickness between two standard plate sizes ends up paying for the next size up.
Thick plate, generally above 50 mm, can have longer lead times than thinner sizes, since fewer mills stock it and it may need to be ordered as a special run. If your part has flexibility in overall thickness, checking standard plate sizes before finalizing the drawing can shorten lead time meaningfully.
Sheet stock
Sheet, generally thinner than plate, is typically cold rolled rather than hot rolled, which is a relevant distinction beyond just thickness. Cold rolling can leave more residual stress in the material than hot rolled plate, which matters for parts sensitive to distortion during and after machining, covered in more depth in thin-wall Invar machining. A thin, precisely toleranced part cut from sheet may need more attention to stress relief than the same geometry would if it had more mass to begin with.
Sheet is the appropriate starting form for thin flat parts, shims, and features where the finished thickness is close to the available sheet thickness, avoiding the waste of starting from thicker plate and machining most of it away.

Grain direction and anisotropy
Rolled Invar, like many rolled metals, can show slightly different mechanical behavior along versus across the rolling direction, though the effect is generally modest compared with the dominant factors of machining stress and heat treatment. For most parts this does not need special consideration. For very tightly toleranced, thin or asymmetric parts, a shop with Invar experience may recommend orienting the part on the stock in a specific direction, which is a detail worth raising if your tolerance is unusually tight.
What to specify
- Overall part envelope and thickness, letting the shop recommend the most efficient stock form rather than specifying bar, plate or sheet by name unless your design specifically requires it
- Flexibility in thickness or diameter, if any, so the shop can match a standard stock size instead of ordering a custom cut
- Quantity and expected reorder volume, since a shop may recommend a different stock strategy for a one-off part than for a part it expects to make repeatedly

Is Invar sheet the same material as Invar plate, just thinner?
Chemically yes, both are Invar 36 to the same specification, but sheet is typically cold rolled to thickness while plate is hot rolled, which can leave sheet with more residual rolling stress that matters for parts sensitive to distortion.
Can a shop substitute plate for bar, or bar for plate, if my size is on the stock availability edge?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking. A part designed around a round bar size that happens to sit at an awkward diameter might machine more economically from plate, or vice versa, depending on what the shop has on hand or can source quickly.
